Bio
Maca Rey is the brainchild of songwriter Boris Canani (Sweet Island Thyme, Honky Funk). In 2009, after a semi-lucid fan told Boris, "You are only as good as your drummer," he started envisioning a new band based on his thoughtful songs and tight drumming. Boris looked outside his usual jamband circle and hooked up with funk drummer Llama Latte (Fuzz 4, Pocket Jones) on Craigslist. Boris recruited Tina V (Samba Ja) and Amanda (Stone Jumpers) from Honky Funk and his long-time friend and bassist Paulo Reyes (Out of Order, Cubensis). The groove could not be denied as Llama sat in for the final Honky Funk show opening for Equaleyes in 2009. Llama later introduced the band to Thierry Renoux (Abakadub, Mocksha, TMP), a keyboard virtuoso with an ear for funky rhythms. Combining a jam band sound with calypso, latin rhythms, rock, and deep funk, Maca Rey found a uniquely danceable fusion of styles. Llama and Thierry bring the funk and soul that get people moving. Tina and Amanda contribute the island flavors, and Boris and Paulo provide catchy latin-rock grooves. Thoughtful, eclectic songwriting takes full advantage of their diverse musical backgrounds and various instruments from around the world. Maca Rey has been pleasing audiences all over Oregon and the Northwest with tight, compelling, high-energy performances. Highlights include shows at The Goodfoot in Portland with Kingfish, Tayberry Jam, Hope Mountain Barter Fair, Black Sheep Family Reunion, and club shows galore. 2011 is becoming a huge year for Maca Rey as they look forward to Portland and Eugene Saturday Markets and more big festival shows to round out the summer. Look for some studio recordings in the fall. -
