Ryan's formal musical training began at age nine when he started playing the clarinet. This early musical beginning laid the foundation of discipline needed to set the stage for the years that followed. With his interest in all aspects of music growing, by age 11 he acquired his first electric bass and began studying under a very encouraging and supportive teacher, who emphasized the importance of listening and proper practicing techniques. Through this instruction, he was exposed to many diverse styles and methods of playing and has performed in many varied settings. Graduation from school culminated in being awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award where he joined the prestigious ranks of previous awardees such as John Petrucci, John Mayer, Pat Metheny, Dave Weckl, Steve Vai, and John Myung to name a few.
Ryan continued his studies at a respected music college in the northeast earning a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Degree. Studying under a world renowned expert of string bass in both jazz and classical music he has had the opportunity to participate in many exciting projects. He was selected to perform under the direction of jazz great Denis DiBlasio (saxophonist, former member of the Maynard Ferguson band); and has performed with vocalist/pianist Peter Eldridge of The New York Voices , among others.
Ryan Holmes is the bassist for Echo & Drake - an acclaimed indie/alternative rock band from Hartford, Connecticut. This seasoned quartet draws upon the best of American and British indie-rock, giving a nod to early Radiohead, Doves, The Cure, Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Phoenix, The National, Fleet Foxes, and Death Cab for Cutie. At the end of 2011, their highly-anticipated debut album, "Sundrenched Elsewhere," was named the #1 Connecticut Album of 2011 by America's oldest continuously running newspaper, The Hartford Courant (Eric Danton).
Ryans performances and playing has been reviewed in magazines, books and online ezines. He has collaborated in Hollywood, writing and performing tracks for California based rock bands, and has worked with musicians and groups in various ways. In his spare time when not performing and touring Ryan is a freelance musician or "bassist-for-hire" and collaborates on various recording projects. Contact him for additional information or assistance with your project.
Ryan uses and endorses Ibanez Bass Guitars,Fender Bass Guitars,Ampeg Bass Amps,Warwick Bass Amps,D'Addario Strings,AKG Wireless Systems & Monster Cables.
